David Teaster, M.D., F.A.A.P.

Dr. David Teaster graduated with honors from Lee University in 1991. He attended the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and completed his residency there in 1998. He joined Black and Benton as a board certified pediatrician that same year. Dr. Teaster and his wife have 3 children. In his spare time he enjoys fishing and UT sports.​

Nancy Phillips, M.D., F.A.A.P.

Dr. Nancy Phillips is board certified and earned both her undergraduate and her medical degrees at Emory University. She completed her residency at the University of Alabama in Birmingham and joined the practice in 1999. Dr. Phillips spends her free time hiking, kayaking, cooking, reading and traveling with her husband.

Megan Mills, D.O.

Dr. Megan Mills is the newest member of the team! She is a Johnson City native who attended Austin Peay State University for her undergraduate degree and obtained her masters degree and osteopathic medical degree from Lincoln Memorial University. She then completed Pediatric residency at the University of Kentucky and has recently relocated back to East Tennessee with her husband and two daughters. Megan loves to spend her free time with family - especially at the lake, a beach, or a UT football game!

Our History

We’re a pediatric office built on family.

Founded by Dr. Joe Black, Jr. and Dr. James Benton in 1962, we have the privilege of caring for patients who are the children (and grandchildren!) of our first patients. We’re a pediatric office located in the heart of Fountain City, and are honored to serve patients from all over East TN and surrounding states. We love welcoming new families to the area in our mission to guide parents in the care of their precious little ones.

Drs. Black and Benton Pediatrics is a second generation practice, as founder Dr. Joe Black, Jr. was joined by his son, Dr. Joe W. Black, III, and daughter-in-law, Dr. Monica Field Black, in 1987. Over the years partners have come and gone, but at the core of our practice we are family. There are currently two doctors: Dr. David Teaster, MD (joined 1998); and Dr. Nancy Phillips, MD (joined 1999).

As one of the long-established pediatric offices in Knoxville, Drs. Black and Benton has helped foster the careers of a number of medical students and residents who ultimately chose pediatrics as their specialty and now practice in the area.
